The accuracy of time and date for the Windows Server is crucial especially for those organization with application that is time sensitive like Microsoft OCS/ Lync, Remote Desktop Services (RDP) etc. The incorrect time and date might lead to the client application logon failure and cause the lost of productivity and boost support operation cost. One of the way to maintain the time and date accuracy is by configure the Windows Server 2008 with Domain Controller Role synchronize its time to NTP time server over the internet.

Please note once the Windows Server 2008 is being promoted as the Domain Controller, the GUI “Internet Time” tab in the Date and Time will gone disappear and the Server by default will get the time and date from hardware internal BIOS clock. Here are the simple steps to re-gain the server time sync to NTP time sync from internet:

Step 1: Open the command prompt

Step 2: Run the command: w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:time.windows.com /syncfromflags:manual /reliable:yes /update

Step 3: Restart the Windows Server Time Services: net stop w32time && net start w32time

The Domain Controller should have the accurate time and date sync from the internet time server and the client PCs of the domain will have the accurate time sync from the domain controller.

When trying to promote a Windows Server 2006 x84 R2 server to a domain controller of a new forest I obtained the following error which stopped the promotion of the system:

The local Administrator account becomes the domain Administrator account when you create a new domain. The new domain cannot be created because the local Administrator account password does not meet requirements.

Currently, a password is not required for the local Administrator account. We recommend that you use the net user command-line tool with the /passwordreg:yes option to require a password for this account before you create the new domain; otherwise, a password will not be required for the domain Administrator account.

To resolve this error, open a command-prompt as Administrator and execute the following command: net user Administrator /passwordreq:yes *

This will ensure that the Administrator account requires a password, and that a password is set. After running this I was able to proceed with the promotion of the server to a DOmain Controller.

While the new Lync Client brings a lot of new functionalities and a complete new look, it isn’t compatible with a OCS 2007 R2 environment. Another downside is that it can’t be installed together with Communicator 2007 on a single machine. When working on both 2007 R2 and Lync 2010 projects, this means the usage of VM’s or uninstall and re-installing a lot, two options which I don’t like personally.

Out-of-the-box the client will give you an error message when you try to sign in into an OCS 2007 R2 pool, stating that the version is not correct. This tells me there IS some kind of communication, however, it’s being detected and blocked.

After some research I found a way to be able to run the Lync 2010 client on a OCS 2007 R2 environment – simply by bypassing a version check. To bypass this check, you have to create a new registry entry:

Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Communicator
Name: DisableServerCheck
Type: DWORD
Value: 1 (00000001)

When this entry has been created, the version check will be skipped, and the Lync Client WILL logon to the OCS 2007 R2 environment. Actually, most of the functionalities just work fine! IM, Presence, calling and video work all as espected.

Of course there are some functionalities which don’t work correctly. One of these functionalities is the “Live Meeting” functionality; this is now built-in into the Lync Client, while in the previous version it was a separate client. Installing Lync will uninstall the LiveMeeting plug-ins in outlook as well, disabling you to schedule an old-fashion meeting. But hey, at least now we can connect to both environments with this new client!

Applies to Kaspersky Administration Kit 8.0

1. Download a Kaspersky Administration Kit 8.0 installation package from the Kaspersky Lab website – version 8.0.2134. The installation package consists of the following files:

kasp8.0.2134_adminkiten.exe – Kaspersky Administration Kit 8.0 installer (build 8.0.2134).

kasp5.0.0474_netagenten.exe – Network Agent installer build 5.0.0474 for Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.6 for ISA Servers 2000 Enterprise Edition remote control.

You can find a Network Agent version 8.0.2134 MSI installer in the Kaspersky Administration Kit 8.0 installation folder (C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Administration Kit\Share\Packages\NetAgent 8.0.2134).

2. Create a backup copy of your Administration server version 6.0 using the utility klbackup.exe or an Administration Server Data backup task.

To be able to restore Administration Server Data, you should save a Server certificate copy (this note only applies to Administration server version 5.0.0474 and earlier – newer versions save the certificate automatically).

3. Run Kaspersky Administration Kit 8.0 installer on the computer with installed Administration server and upgrade its version. Reverse compatibility between new and old Administration server versions is supported. All the data from the old Administration server will be saved during an upgrade. You will need to reboot the PC after upgrading.

Important note! Kaspersky Administration Kit 8.0 does not support the Microsoft Windows NT operating system. It is not possible to install Kaspersky Administration Kit 8.0 over version 6.0.

4. Run Kaspersky Administration Kit 8.0 installer on all other administrator workstations (computers with installed Console without a Server) to upgrade the Administration Console version.

Open a Console, connect to the Server and make sure that policies and tasks have updated correctly.

If a Server has failed to install, reinstall Administration Server and restore from an Administration Server data backup copy.

5. When you start an Administration console for the first time, a Policies and Tasks Conversion Wizard will start. This uses the existing policies and tasks for Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations / Servers MP3 to create new policies for the same applications version 6.0 MP4. The names of policies and tasks created in this way contain the word converted.

The policies and tasks conversion wizard can be started manually by right-clicking the Administration Server in the Console and selecting the command All tasks > Policies and tasks conversion wizard.

6. Create a Network Agent version 8.0.2134 installation group task for client computers (or a task for specific computers). Run this task by schedule or manually. The Network Agent version will be upgraded on client computers after successful termination of this task.

7. Create a Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations / Servers MP4 installation task for client computers with installed Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations / Servers MP3. You can merge Items 6 and 7 of this instruction to organize the simultaneous installation of Network Agent and Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows Workstations / Servers.

Important note: Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations / Servers MP4 will not be installed on computers running Microsoft 98/ME/NT. Instead, leave the existing installed Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations / Servers MP3 on such computers.

8. Configure automatic license distribution on all computers in the logical network. To do this go to the console tree node Repositories > Licenses. Click Add License and indicate a key file path. Make sure that the box Automatically deploy license to managed computers is checked. Click Next and then Finish to terminate the Install License Wizard.

This key will now be automatically deployed on computers with Kaspersky Lab applications authorized to use this license and not having an active key so far.

There is no need to upgrade the Network Agent version on computers with Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.7 for Novell NetWare, Kaspersky Mobile Security 7.0 Enterprise Edition and Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.7 for Linux File Servers\Workstations installed applications. These use special builds of Network Agent integrated into antivirus software to connect to an Administration server.

There is also no need to upgrade the Network Agent version on computers with Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.6 for ISA Servers 2000 Enterprise Edition installed – Network Agent version 5.0.0474 is used for remote management of this application.

Please note: You should create SEPARATE policies and tasks for Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 MP3 for Windows Workstations / Servers and Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 MP4 for Windows Workstations / Servers! Tasks and policies for version 6.0 MP3 do not apply to 6.0 MP4, and vice versa.

Please be aware – these applications are shown separately in the New task wizard:
