Windows Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager

Home / Blog / Windows Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager

Providing business continuity and high availability across every application and workload in your cloud can present quite a challenge. There’s cost, the need for remote monitoring capabilities, recovery time, and the complexity of restoring inter-dependent services in the right order. That’s why many workloads that could benefit from protection often go without it. Windows Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager helps simplify the business continuity of applications by coordinating the replication of virtual machines at a secondary location.

Windows Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager helps protect your important applications by coordinating the replication of Microsoft System Center clouds to a secondary location, monitoring availability, and orchestrating recovery as needed.

Business continuity for your application at a second site

Windows Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager helps simplify the task of delivering application availability. For organizations with two or more data centers looking to protect vital workloads running in their cloud, Windows Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager provides automated replication and the orchestrated recovery of applications and workloads between datacenters.

What is Windows Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager?
Windows Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager helps you centrally configure and administer business continuity between clouds managed by System Center Virtual Machine Manager. Health monitoring and recovery orchestration provide for a quick recovery in the event of a service outage.

How does it work?
Hyper-V Recovery Manager enables you to take advantage of the Windows Azure Management Portal. Once you have created a Windows Azure account, you select the System Center Virtual Machine Manager cloud or clouds you want monitored and then build scripts for orchestrating a recovery. Windows Azure stores the recovery plan in a vault, one plan per vault. Each vault holds only the basic information needed for recovering a System Center Virtual Machine Manager cloud. The vault does not store virtual machines or workload data.

With Hyper-V Recovery Manager, you install a software agent on each Virtual Machine Manager server. To ensure secure communications, you also install certificates on the Virtual Machine Manager server and Hyper-V Recovery Manager. These certificates help identify and authorize the Virtual Machine Manager server in each datacenter. They also enable encryption of all communications between server and service.

Hyper-V Recovery Manager communicates only with the System Center Virtual Machine Manager servers that have the agent and certificate installed. No communication occurs between the service and the individual Hyper-V servers or the virtual machines hosting workloads.

Windows Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager features

Automated protection
Hyper-V Recovery Manager helps protect System Center Virtual Machine Manager clouds by automating the replication of their virtual machines to a secondary location. Windows Server Hyper-V Replica provides the ongoing asynchronous replication of each virtual machine.

Continuous health monitoring
Hyper-V Recovery Manager remotely monitors application availability at the primary datacenter on an ongoing basis. It does not store any workload data.

Orchestrated recovery
Hyper-V Recovery Manager helps automate the orderly recovery of applications and workloads in the event of a site outage at the primary datacenter. You can also use this process to perform a test failover of your recovery plan or to temporarily move applications to a secondary location.

Why choose Windows Azure Hyper-V Recovery Manager?

Simplified replication
Hyper-V Recovery Manager utilizes the Hyper-V Replica asynchronous virtual machine replication capabilities in Windows Server 2012 to extend site-to-site protection to entire clouds.

Easy implementation of recovery plans
Hyper-V Recovery Manager helps you easily build and customize recovery plans to orchestrate failover of the virtual machines that compose your cloud. Recovery plans can include ordered groups of virtual machines, custom scripts, and manual actions. Hyper-V Recovery Manager can also use recovery plans to help handle planned downtime by failing services over to a secondary data center.
